The Stool Shed

Mike Kyler

Mike has worked in wood as a hobby for years, but began formal training at the acclaimed Bauhaus Academy in 1998, under the instruction of the award-winning master craftsman and artist Berthold Schwaiger. At the Academy, he learned the basics of fine furniture design and construction. His style, however, has evolved, through a series of opportunities and learning experiences, to encompass a more organic form which would be readily recognizable by our early frontier forefathers.

Using slabs of local native hardwoods, as well as lumber reclaimed from old barns and tobacco sheds, Mike creates uncomplicated, functional, and “warm” designs. While he can create traditional furniture, he prefers letting the nature of the wood determine what its final form will be. This results in coffee and end tables, stools, benches, and other pieces which have very few straight lines, sharp angles, or highly polished surfaces.
